44th World Congress on Military Medicine
The 44th ICMM World Congress will take place from 5 to 9 September 2022 in Brussels.
Dear National Delegate, dear Colleague,
World War I revealed the importance of closer cooperation between the armed forces medical services and resulted in the ICMM being founded more than a century ago. In July 1921, the first international congress of military medicine and pharmacy was held in Brussels. The intention was to bring you all back together in Brussels exactly 100 years later but the COVID crisis threw a spanner in the works and the 44th ICMM World Congress will finally take place from 5 to 9 September 2022 in Brussels.
Also on behalf of our Chairman, Major General Andreas Stettbacher, I have the honour of inviting you to the General Assembly which will be held on Tuesday 6 September and Thursday 8 September 2022. Your participation in the General Assembly is very important because it allows you to help determine the future of our organization. It will also permit you to take note of the changes that ICMM is currently undergoing: the strategic plan including the new communication policy and a new communication partner, a new website, a new editorial line for our journal, and much more. Under the motto “Knowledge beyond borders”, the intention is to give ICMM a boost and to make our organization future-proof
You are, of course, also cordially invited to participate in the World Congress. The Belgian organizing committee has spared no effort in providing a high-quality scientific program on the occasion of the centenary. Under the overarching motto “Secure the Legacy”, the following four main congress themes have been chosen:
- The battle against infection and Phage Therapy
- Far forward surgery
- From rehab to prehab
- From shell shock to mental fitness
Throughout those four key themes, reference will also be made to ethics and history, but also to innovative technologies and concepts such as ‘One Health’ and ‘Global Health’.
The program and more detailed information can be found on the website of the congress: icmmworldcongress2021.org
Some excellent keynote lectures will be sure to delight you and representatives from International Organisations such as WHO, UN and ICRC will inform you about projects that are highly relevant to military medicine.
I trust that the World Congress and the General Assembly will meet your expectations and above all I hope that the week in Brussels in September will provide us with the framework for collegial and friendly meetings face to face and will allow us, after two particularly difficult years, to once again strengthen the ties between our military medical services.
I am very much looking forward to meeting you in Brussels in September,
Geert Laire, MD, MSc
Major General (ret)
Secretary-General of the ICMM
