Report of the 38th World Congress
on Military Medicine

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
4th to 9th October 2009


The 38th World Congress on Military Medicine was hosted by the Ministry of Defence of Malaysia and was organized by the Health Services Division, Malaysian Armed Forces, under the aegis of the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM). It was held in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from the 4th to the 9th of October 2009.

Participants from 72 countries have attended this congress.

The congress was opened by the marching of member states’ flags, speeches by outgoing ICMM Chairman Brig Gen Mohamed Kamel CHEBBI, by new ICMM Chairman Lt Gen Dato’ Seri (Dr) Sulaiman BIN ABDULLAH, by ICMM Secretary General Dr Jacques SANABRIA. The Honourable Defence Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid BIN HAMIDI, delivered the opening speech and made the official opening/launching of the congress. After the opening ceremony, the Defence Minister also did the opening of World Military Medicine Expo.


Scientific Presentations
The Scientific Committee of the Congress, in close relationship with the Scientific Council of the ICMM, undertook the preparation of the scientific presentations. The sessions lasted from Monday to Friday, 5-9 October, 2009. The main theme was: “Health Services Support in Operations”.

- Technical Commission on Education

Round Table of the Heads of Delegation
A Round Table of the Heads of Delegation was held for the first time since the creation of the World Congresses of ICMM. This round table, which dealt with scientific and technical topics, aroused a great interest.


The General Assembly of the ICMM was held in two sessions, the first on Monday afternoon 5 October 2009, and the second on Wednesday afternoon 7 October 2009. Two new Member States have joined the ICMM, which leads to a total current number of 104 Member States. The closing ceremony was held in the presence of Honourable Deputy Chief of Malaysian Air Force, on Friday 9 October.
Speeches were delivered by the host country chairman of the Congress Scientific Committee, the chairman of the ICMM Scientific Council, the secretary general of the ICMM, and the upcoming host country delegate (Nigeria).

Certificates of Appreciation were ceremoniously awarded to the outgoing members of the Scientific Committee of the Congress.

The Jules Voncken Prizes for the best article appeared in the International Review of the Armed Forces Medical Services during the past two years was awarded to Lt. Colonel Man Mohan HARJAI (India) for his article: “Management of mine blast injuries in the northern sector of India”, and for the best poster presented during the Congress, the Major (Vet) Jean-Paul DEMONCHEAUX (France) was awarded for his poster: “Animal and public health risks generated by pathogens imported from operational missions: French approach of sanitary control plans”.

The chairman of the ICMM presented mementos to each National Delegate.

The Guest of Honour, the Deputy Chief of Malaysian Air Force, delivered the closing speech.

Marching out of Member’s State flags closed the ceremony.
