REPORT OF THE SEMINAR ON MILITARY MEDICINE AND REGIONAL ASSEMBLY OF
THE ICMM PAN AMERICAN REGIONAL WORKING GROUP

The Pan-American Regional Working Group (RWG) on Military Medicine of the ICMM met in Regional Assembly from 18 to 21 November 2014, in the town of Punta Cana, Bavaro, Dominican Republic.

National delegates from the following countries attended the event: Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and USA.

A member of the military Health Service of Colombia and two members of the Police of Panama attended as observers.

The Regional Assembly was chaired by Colonel Dr. Cirilo Fernández ABREU from the Dominican Republic, the current Chairman of the Pan-American RWG, assisted by the representative of the Secretary General of the ICMM, Medical Colonel Antonio VIQUEIRA and Colonel Dr. Abel Medina OGANDO, head of the Health Service of the Dominican Armed Forces.

The goal of the meeting of the Regional Assembly were: design of a strategic plan and the search for a country to host the next meeting of the Pan-American RWG, to be held in 2016. There were several potential candidates.

A seminar on military medicine was also held where the following topics were presented:

1. Social Security and Military Health of the Armed Forces of America and
2. Response Capabilities of the Armed Forces in disaster situations.

There was an inaugural lecture by Dr. Ciro UGARTE WHO/PAHO "Role of the Armed Forces in Humanitarian Disaster and Emergency Health Assistance".

The Department of Defense, the US Southern Command, WHO/PAHO, UNAIDS and UNFPA, participated as exhibitors and sponsors. A Satellite Meeting of COPRECOS LAC was also organised.
