Report of the 4th ICMM Pan-Asia Pacific Congress on Military Medicine

Abstract Book

The 4th ICMM Pan Asia-Pacific Congress on Military Medicine was organized in Tehran, from the 12th to the 15th of October, 2018 by the Ministry of Defence of the Islamic Republic of Iran in collaboration with the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM) under the main topic: «The Future Horizon of Military Medicine».

The 4 Broad themes were:
• CBRNE: Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives.
• Psychosocial health and cognitive science in military community.
• Disaster management and military traumatology.
• Military Medical Education and international collaborations.

There were 8 Accessory Topics:
• Aerospace and Hyperbaric medicine.
• Health protection and rehabilitation for military community.
• Military Dentistry and oral health in military units.
• Military nursing care in extraordinary condition.
• Veterinary, food hygiene and nutrition for armed force.
• Future Studies Military Medicine.
• Military Medical Ethics for future military medicine.
• Complementary and alternative medicine for soldiers.

The Opening Ceremony was honoured by the presence of the Minister of Health and Medical Education of the I.R. Iran: Dr. Seyyed Hassan GHAZIZADEH HASHEMI.

The congress was attended by 2819 participants representing 33 countries (Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, Belarus, Belgium, China, France, Germany (Exhibition), Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Italy (ICRC), Japan, Kazakhstan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand (ICRC), Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russian Federation, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland (ICRC), Syria, Thailand, Turkey, Venezuela, Vietnam).

The Scientific Committee received 854 abstracts and accepted 88 abstracts for oral presentations, 81 electronic poster presentations and 155 virtual poster presentations.

The following topics were discussed in 6 Plenary Sessions:
• The Role Of Innovative Technologies For Future Military Medicine.
• Advances In Chemical War Victim Management.
• The Scope Of Cognitive Science In Military Medicine.
• Cooperation between military and civil health services in disaster risk management.
• The perspective of military medical education.
• A Shame for Humans in the Age of Human Rights.

Furthermore, during the high level scientific congress 11 Oral presentation sessions (11 invited speakers, 88 papers), 12 Round-table sessions, 3 Expert meetings and 22 workshops were organized.

During the 4th ICMM Pan Asia-Pacific Congress on Military Medicine, a medical exhibition was held to allow all participants to discover the latest innovations in medical and pharmaceutical equipment.

The Minister of Defense of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Brigadier General Amir HATAMI, and the Chief of the General Staff of Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad BAGHERI, honoured with their presence the Closing Ceremony and addressed the participants.

As cultural part of the congress, the hosts organized an Icebreaker party, on Friday evening, a gala dinner on Saturday at the Milad Tower Complex, and a goodbye dinner with a visit to the nature bridge on Monday evening. The hosts organized a visit to the Islamic Revolution and Holy Defence Museum. Furthermore a visit to the Baqiyatallah Medical Sciences University was scheduled where the participants could attend an Exercise on Emergency Preparedness and Response for Chemical Threats. Moreover, during the congress, the partners of the participants of the congress could register for various cultural events and trips.

The Regional Assembly, which was held on the occasion of the 4th ICMM Pan Asia-Pacific Congress, accepted three new members: Armenia, Turkey and Vietnam.

The following countries were present at the Regional Assembly: Armenia, China, I.R. Iran, Japan, Pakistan, Russian Federation, Thailand, Turkey and Vietnam. Greece was present as an observer.
The representative of the Russian Federation gave a short report of the activities made during its chairmanship. The Islamic Republic of Iran made a proposal for the creation of a workgroup for Military Mental Health and presented an ICMM congress evaluation system. The Secretary-General gave an update about the Health Care in Danger project and distributed a follow-up questionnaire. The current Chairman provided a two-year plan for the Pan Asia-Pacific Regional Working Group. At this moment no candidate made the proposal to host the next Regional Congress and Assembly.

This Regional Assembly was chaired in an excellent way by Brigadier General Dr Hasan ARAGHIZADEH, the present Chairman of the Pan Asia-Pacific Regional Working Group for Military Medicine.

The ICMM is very grateful to the Minister of Defence of Iran, to the Surgeon General, Brigadier General Dr Hasan ARAGHIZADEH, to the Chairman of the Organizing Committee and his team, to the Chairman of the Scientific Committee and his team and to all the people who made this 4th ICMM Pan Asia-Pacific Congress of Military Medicine very successful.
