REPORT OF THE 1st INTERNATIONAL MILITARY CONGRESS
OF TROPICAL MEDICINE AND SUB-SAHARAN DISEASES


The 1st International Military Congress of Tropical Medicine and Sub-Saharan Diseases, recommended by the International Committee of Military Medicine (ICMM), was held from 23 to 25 October 2016 in Gabes (Tunisia). This congress was organized under the patronage of the Minister of National Defense by the General Directorate of Military Health in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of Sfax.

This Congress, accredited by the National Instance of Health Accreditation (INASanté) which awarded it 16 Continuing Professional Development Units (CPD), was held concurrently with the 7th Tunisian-German Course of Tropical Medicine & Sub Saharan Pathologies and which took place from 23 to 28 October 2016 at the military hospital of Gabes.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Brigadier General (Pr) Mondher YEDEAS, Director General of Military Health in the presence of the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Sfax and the Regional Director of Public Health. The closing ceremony was chaired by the Senior Colonel Commander of the 1st Brigade in the presence of the Director of the Military Hospital of Gabes.

The congress was ordered into seven plenary sessions, five workshops, two free communication sessions and two poster sessions. The themes of the plenary sessions were around emerging and re-emerging diseases, travel medicine, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, leishmaniasis; The deployment of forces in sub-Saharan environment and the management of highly infectious diseases. The workshops were highly successful and focused on dressings & innovations, malaria control, vaccination & cold chain, infections following the return from the tropic and cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The congress was an opportunity to bring together around 350 military and civilian medical doctors, veterinarians, pharmacists, dentists and paramedical personnel from Tunisia, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, China, Spain, Italy, Norway and Senegal to discuss, enrich and exchange experiences in the management of tropical and emerging diseases and the management of sub-Saharan diseases.

The organizing committee thanks all the scientific and the support partners that helped to organize this congress which will be renewed every two years. He also thanked the participants for their attendance, input and motivation and for the exchange they had provided throughout this event; The only guarantee for its success.

The Anglophone and francophone officers of the military health services of the member countries of the ICMM are all invited to participate massively in the next session of this congress in 2018.
