Report of the 5th Edition of the International Prize Fidel Pagés Miravé

In 2011, the General Inspection of the Spanish Armed Forces Medical Service announced that the International Prize Fidel Pagés Miravé was also opened to none-Spanish authors. The papers, written in Spanish or English, presented to this Prize have to be unpublished. The subject must be an original work in the Health Sciences, in accordance with the scientific research methodology. A jury evaluates its utility or relationship to the Medical Service. An original paper on Historical Science of the Military Medical Services can be also considered, with the same methodological demands, and based essentially on primary sources.

On October 29, the 5th Edition of the International Prize Fidel Pagés Miravé was awarded to five researchers, authors of the study entitled “Kill the killers": Terapia con células natural killer estimuladas con IL-15 en pacientes pediátricos con cáncer refractario” (“kill the killers”: treatment by natural killer cell stimulated by IL-15 in paediatric patients with refractory cancers).

The Undersecretary of State of Defence, Irene DOMINGUEZ-ALCAHUD, accompanied by the acting Inspector General of Health, Brigadier General Francisco ALSINA (MD), and other Military Authorities, presented the award in the premises of the Ministry of Defence. The Chairman of the Scientific Council, Major General (ret.) Marcel MERLIN (MD), represented the Secretary General of the ICMM.

The amount of the Prize, for a total of 6000 euros, was granted to the five-author team, comprising Drs Jaime Valentín QUIROGA, Lucía Fernández CASANOVA, Inmaculada Génesis MARTIN, Fernando Núñez MARTIN and Antonio Pérez MARTINEZ.

A consolation-prize of 3000 euros was granted to the study entitled "Condiciones de transporte de medicamentos en misiones internacionales de las Fuerzas Armadas. Diseño de un estudio de estabilidad específico para operaciones" (Conditions of carriage of drugs in international missions of the Armed Forces. Design of a specific stability study).

The five authors of this study are Lieutenant Colonel Alejandro Zamanillo SAINZ, Mrs Mercedes Verón MOROS, Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Juberías SÀNCHEZ, Lieutenant Colonel Juan Ignacio Cabrera MERINO, and Lieutenant Colonel Juan Pedro Mañes PRADAS. An article, based on this study, will be soon published in the International Review of the Armed Forces Medical Services.
